Check out our closest relatives in Pongoland

Pongoland is an ape enclosure that is one of its kind in the world with chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans all awaiting you. The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig also conducts research here and at several discovery stations in Pongoland you can do some of your own research.

A kingdom of apes

In Pongoland you can experience our closest relatives playing, climbing and foraging. You will pass through spacious outdoor enclosures on wooden walkways along watercourses to our central attraction. Through the cave entrance visitors then enter a habitat that has been created to closely resemble a tropical climate. Watch the gentle silver back patrolling his territory and orang-utans clambering on trees and ropes, while exotic birds fly around our tropical dome.

Explore together

Pongoland houses the Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center. Under the authority of the Max Planck Institute, researchers study the behaviour, perception and communication of apes – and what’s more you can even look over their shoulders while they are doing so. The best time to see this is in the morning.
