Cuban grassquits live in semi-dry areas, pine forests, scrublands, plantations and built-up areas. They forage on the ground for seeds and small fruits. The birds can live individually or in pairs but also in larger swarms outside of the breeding season. They build their ball-shaped nests out of woven grass on the thorny
branches of trees. After 11–15 days the chicks hatch out of the 2–3 eggs that are laid.
