Zoo Leipzig and its various partners in Chilean Patagonia are dedicated to the research and conservation of temperate rainforests, wetlands and the Pacific coast.
In particular, our efforts focus on three critically endangered species, which act as flagship species for their respective habitats: the Darwin’s frog, the southern river otter and the Humboldt penguin.

Darwin’s frog
Concepción & Huilo Huilo
The Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii) is threatened by habitat loss, climate change and the chytrid fungus. We support research and conservation of these unique frogs and their habitat, and run a breeding centre in Chile.
Southern river otter
Chiloé
Introduced diseases and habitat loss are endangering the southern river otter (Lontra provocax). We are involved in research and education projects to protect these rare otters from extinction and preserve wetlands.
Humboldt penguin
Pacific coast
Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) are under threat due to climate change and fishing. We are working in the field studying penguin colonies so that we can develop specific conservation measures in priority areas.
