Hartlaub's ducks live in rainforests and gallery forests, preferably along small rivers and ponds. Their diet consists of invertebrates, plants and seeds. Clutches usually comprise of eight eggs, which are incubated for 32 days. Almost everything that is known about the reproduction of Hartlaub's ducks comes from observations in captivity, as this species is very recluse in its distribution range and thus there is very little research on it.
