The family of alligatorids is differentiated from the family of true crocodiles in having the fourth tooth of the under jaw protruding into a pit within the upper jaw when the mouth is closed. In the true crocodiles this tooth fits sideways. The life expectancy of these alligators is more than 50 years (85 years has even been ecorded).
