Did you know?

Lake Patzcuaro salamanders remain in the larval stage for their entire lives. They reach sexual maturity without changing their larval form or going through the metamorphosis that is otherwise common among amphibians.

This species is highly endangered due to environmental pollution and poaching. Local nuns, who have long produced cough syrup from Lake Patzcuaro salamanders, noticed early on that the amphibians were becoming increasingly rare and started breeding them, probably ensuring their survival.
