Gorillas live in a harem community with one dominant „silverback“ male as the leader. Males beat their chests to impress one another, which is usually sufficient to determine the hierarchy. Only rarely does it come to a fight. In spite of their size, they are primarily herbivores. Males require a daily food intake of ca. 30 kg of plants while females require ca. 18 kg.
