Meerkats are diurnal and live in groups. The females dominate and it is only the highest-ranking female „the queen“ that reproduces. They spend the night in underground burrows that they have dug or claimed. During their daily foraging, one individual always keeps guard from an elevated position. If danger is looming, an
alarm call is given off and the meerkats flee to their burrow.

Primarily insects, spiders, worms as well as smaller vertebrates and also small quantities of plants
Dry forests, open shrublands, steppes, prairies, semi-desert landscapes
Gestation period: ca. 77 days, 1–6 offspring; weaning: 2 months; sexually mature at one year of age; maximum age: over 20 years
