Did you know?

Scarlet ibis chicks are not born red. They have a brown plumage that does not change colour until after moulting in their second year. Groups of 30–70 ibis forage together. The male scarlet ibis are usually larger with a longer bill.

Diet:

Predominantly crustaceans, but also snails, molluscs, worms and small fish

Habitat:

Coastal mangroves and islands

Reproduction:

1–3 eggs; incubation: 21–23 days; breeding in colonies
