Chimpanzees live in communities with close social bonds, in which the males are dominant. To become dominant in the hierarchy, coalitions with other males are often formed. High-ranking individuals impress by drumming on roots, screaming and uprooting plants. When two groups meet, there are often clashes whereby
individuals of the inferior group are even killed.

Fruits, bark, blossoms, seeds, insects, rodents, birds, bushbucks and other primates such as colobus monkeys


Lowland and montane rainforests, dry forests, bush savannah and grasslands; also close to human settlements


Gestation period: 203–244 days, one off spring; suckling period: at least two years; sexual maturity
at 6–7 years; maximum life span: 60 years
