When moulting, Chiloe wigeons can be found in larger flocks of up to 100 ducks. Monogamous pairs live together during the breeding season. Males and females hardly differ in appearance. The drakes display a more strongly pronounced iridescence of the green cap and their bills are lighter.

Diet:

Predominantly, they feed on aquatic plants, sedges and grasses. In the summer, they sometimes feed on small fish and worms.

Freshwater lakes and rivers close to grasslands

5–9 eggs; incubation: 24–26 days
