Who’s calling?

Some penguin species in the Antarctic have loud, booming calls to communicate over long distances in icy winds. In warmer regions, their calls often resemble those of donkeys. Even the smallest of penguins can make so much noise. Every penguin family has its own distinctive calls, which is why chicks and their parents can find their way back to each other even in large colonies. 

There are 19 different penguin species. They all live in the southern hemisphere.

No matter how you turn it, polar bears and penguins will never meet.

Plumage as a thermal coat

The penguin’s hybrid plumage

The penguin’s plumage works efficiently as insulation, trapping air and minimising heat loss even in extreme weather conditions. It is wind-resistant and remains smooth and compact even in high winds. This is made possible by a unique hybrid plumage.

It consists of stiff outer feathers (1), which overlap with neighbouring feathers like roof tiles, thus forming a waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer. The fluffy down feathers (2) beneath form a layer of insulation.

Additional downy feathers (3) reinforce the insulation (5) against the cold, with a thick layer of fat (4) beneath the plumage intensifying this.

Perfect adaptation

Penguins can’t fly. However, they have many special characteristics that help them to adapt to a wide range of habitats. They are agile swimmers and excellent divers; many of them can even swim in the icy waters around Antarctica. Different means of regulating their body temperature make this possible.

Warm feet – not a good idea!

Penguins always have cold feet – and that’s a good thing.

Penguins have something in their legs that acts like a heat exchanger.

This is particularly useful for penguin species that stand for long periods in snow and ice.

The cold blood from the feet flows back to the heart through the veins, which are next to the arteries, carrying warm blood down from the heart. Using counter current heat exchange, the blood running through the veins cools the arterial blood, whilst at the same time the arteries warm the blood flowing back through the veins.

Did you know?

If their feet were warm, the ice beneath them would melt and the penguin would be frozen stiff in cold outdoor temperatures, similar to what happens when a tongue sticks to an iron bar in winter.


Moulting - just three weeks until the new plumage

Once a year, usually just after the breeding season, penguins shed their entire plumage, known as moulting. A new set of feathers is important because old, worn-out feathers lose their protective function.

  • During this time, they lose up to 50 per cent of their body weight, which is why they build up large fat reserves beforehand.
  • When moulting, penguins cannot go into the water to hunt for food and are not very well protected against the cold.
  • Moulting takes up a lot of energy, but is vital for their survival.

Penguins spend a lot of time every day preening their plumage. As they do, they spread a natural oil from their uropygial (oil) gland over their plumage, which protects their feathers from moisture and wear and tear. This gland is at the base of their tails.

Is it too warm for the penguins in Leipzig?

Some penguin species, such as the Humboldt penguin, live in regions where temperatures are similar to those in Germany. As such, summers in parts of Chile are often not that different from those in Leipzig.

Do penguins sweat?

Like all birds, penguins do not have sweat glands and therefore cannot sweat. They have to protect themselves from the heat in other ways.

  • When it gets really hot, they take a cool bath or look for a place in the shade.
  • Their thick plumage also protects them from the sun.
  • Much like panting dogs, they breathe with their beaks open, thereby releasing heat through their respiratory tracts.
  • Penguins also release heat through their featherless body parts, such as their feet, beaks and the pink patches of skin above their eyes.
