These colourful songbirds are found in Central America and the south of the USA and even though they inhabit orchards, parks and gardens, they are relatively recluse. They feed on insects and larvae, building their nests in small trees or bushes. In the mating season, males defend their territories against rival buntings. It is the females that incubate the three to four eggs for a fortnight.
