Nesting colonies of the Malagasy pond heron are on Madagas- car and its neighbouring islands. Outside of the breeding sea- son, they also migrate to East Africa. They inhabit areas close to waterbodies where they can catch small vertebrates. They make their nests in colonies in trees or bushes. However, these kinds of habitats are becoming increasingly scarce due to deforestation and drainage. These herons are also hunted, which is why they are considered to be highly endangered.
