The smallest of 8 whistling duck species. In addition to its small size it can be distinguished by the yellow ring around the eye. Found in loose colonies and flocks it inhabits smaller lakes and ponds with vegetation. The diet comprises of grasses, rice- and aquatic plants with crustaceans. Nests are found in trees or tree crevices. 7–12 eggs are laid. Incubation takes 22–30 days.
