Pongoland is an ape enclosure that is unique of its kind in the world. Chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orang-utans all await you here. Furthermore, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig conducts research here and at several discovery stations in Pongoland you can do your own investigations.
In Pongoland you can experience our closest relatives playing, climbing and foraging. On wooden walkways over the water you will pass through spacious outdoor enclosures to our central attraction: a tropical dome. Through the cave entrance visitors enter a habitat that closely resembles a natural tropical humid climate. Experience how gentle silver backs patrol their territory and see orang-utans climbing on trees and ropes. You will see exotic birds flying about, while outside you can hear the resounding calls of the gibbons.

Pongoland houses the Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center. In conjunction with the Max Planck Institute, researchers study the behaviour, perception and communication of apes – and what’s more you can even look over their shoulders while they are doing it. For this the best time to come to Pongoland is in the morning.
